This morning, to the surprise of indie music fans around the blogosphere, it was announced that Rachael Ray will descend upon Austin, TX for the city’s annual music and arts event, South by Southwest. Her hubby’s band, the Cringe, is maybe playing at the mega-fest, but Ray plans on making her own impression in Austin (at least in ways other than eating her way through there on $40). Idolator.com reports that Ray is hosting her own showcase, and it’s been described as “a feast of hot bands and tasty foods.” And it might feature buzz-amassing bands! Woman’s got taste in something other than food! Fun!
Ray was recruiting Battles—a New York quartet that grooves through layers of mostly-instrumental, totally futuristic art rock—for her showcase, but the group isn’t making a stop in Austin this year. She’s also courting other acclaimed noisemongers: Toronto’s Holy F---. That band has yet to confirm its slot in Ray's lineup, Pitchfork reveals. So maybe she’ll ask Food Network compatriot Duff to play, since he’s in an experimental noise outfit all his own, the generously-punctuated ...soihadto...
Five artists will reportedly round out Ray’s lineup, and we’re hoping that Meatloaf or the recently-reunited Blind Melon will show up, just because that would be wacky, if somehow appropriate. Still, we’d settle for Spoon.

You know, I love the idea of bringing music and food and pop culture together. And I really do hope that the Food Network will do more shows that target a younger audience. But what's up with Rachael Ray throwing a SXSW party? I find it very hard to believe that she has any interest in these indie bands. The whole thing seems really phony and icky.
If the Food Network wants to reach the hipster demographic, they need a new host who represents that demographic. I can think of a couple of people who are creatively bringing food and music together, but the author of this blog isn't one of them. I mean, I get the (extremely corny) joke, but Meatloaf isn't the type of band that would play SXSW. And that XYZ affair video is several months old. And, I mean, what kind of blog only posts once ever 4 days?
Come on, Food Network – you can do better!
